The goal at Sarasota Manatee Association for Riding Therapy (SMART) is to enable individuals with mental and physical impairments to exercise both their spirits and bodies through therapeutic horseback riding. Since 1987, SMART, a non-profit organization, has provided a high quality program for local riders and their families, serving both children and adults with special needs. Our aim is to serve as diverse a range of disabilities as possible.

Our students have a wide range of disabilities, including: Autism, Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Multiple Sclerosis, Blindness, Emotional Disorders and Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder.

In addition, a significant number of our students are adopted or in the foster care system.

The consistency of the therapeutic riding program we provide is of immeasurable value to our riders and families. |
At SMART, the horses are the therapists! They are the reason our program is different from any other therapy programs. The horse / human connection is an integral part of the program and is directly responsible for the overall realized benefits.
SMART is a 501 (c) 3 organization and relies heavily on community involvement and support. All eligible riders are accepted into the program and no one is turned away due to financial reasons.

Licenses, Memberships and Awards:
SMART is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association Premier Accredited Center, and all SMART instructors are NARHA Certified Instructors
