The GAP School is a 501(c)(3) organization. It is a one year or multi-year intervention full-day program for students ages 5-16. It serves students who have fallen through the cracks from a traditional learning environment.

The School offers a new concept for the learning disability community. It was developed by Amy F. Weinberger, CEO/President, with the goal of filling a gap for kids academically, cognitively, socially and developmentally. The GAP School offers the best of both worlds by offering the advantages of outcome-based learning with the ability to provide a highly customizable educational action care plan that meets the unique learning needs of each student.

Our students come from a variety of racial and cultural backgrounds, and from both public and independent schools around the state of Florida. Our student population includes — but is not limited to — students who may be diagnosed with a learning difference, dyslexia, attention-deficit disorder, anxieties and depression, gifted, or high-functioning autism or Asperger’s . But once students enter The GAP School, only multi-talented labels define them. The school does not accept students whose difficulties are primarily behavioral.

Due to the remarkable nature of our school, we are constantly striving to bring cutting edge teaching and training to our staff so that our students and families can feel success. Each year we are able to evaluate what went right and what needs improvements. That creates opportunities to restructure for best delivery models, better integration of services, and to use a staff’s strengths to engage all students. For example, the upcoming 2006-2007 school year’s curriculum includes a remarkable science, mathematical, theater approach. This model offers opportunities for all students to better connect with their own learning.

The philosophies of The GAP School are embedded in Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence model and Dr. Mel Levine’s neurodevelopmental construct model. When the teaching team, students and families understand the student’s strengths and challenges, the outcomes are more realistic. Students start out with a multi-talented label instead of a learning disability label.
