Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, founded in 1968, provides one-to-one mentoring services to children ages 6 to 18 years old throughout the Gulf Coast of Florida in Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto, Florida Ridge, and parts of West Charlotte counties. The organization provides mentoring services to an average of 1600 children each year, with the help of over 1,000 wonderful adult volunteers.

The Mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships with measurable impact.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast realizes that volunteers do not always have a lot of time give.  We provide two categories of volunteer/mentor options, Community-Based Programs and School-Based Programs.  The volunteer/mentor is referred to as a "Big" and the child/teen is referred to as a "Little."

In the School-Based Program, the Big and Little typically:

  -  Read together
  -  Work on school assignments
  -  Play sports or computer games
  -  Or simply discuss life and personal issues

In the Community-Based Program, the Big and Little get together on their own time and share in fun activities in the community such as:

  -  Shooting hoops
  -  Watching a movie
  -  Taking a walk in the park
  -  Or just hanging out and talking

Volunteers Have a Big Impact:

• 95% show improved academic performance
• 93% show improved attitude in school
• 94% showed improved relationships with peers and family
• 97% improved self-confidence

Each person can make a difference. All it takes is time.
