The freedom to travel alone with safety and dignity - this is the meaning of a guide dog. It takes approximately two years to train and place a guide dog with a blind individual. Careful selective breeding and careful training as puppies help these dogs learn over 40 commands in their six months of intensive training.
The dog, equipment and instruction are provided free of charge to the student. All costs are supported entirely by donation.
Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. (“Southeastern”), the national non-profit organization headquartered in Florida, has been accepted as a “full member” of the prestigious International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF). Southeastern joins an international community of approximately 70 members, and is one of only eight guide dog schools in the United States to achieve such accreditation.
