Location/Directions:  I-75 Exit 195 go west on Laurel Rd 2 miles then right onto Mission Valley Blvd then one mile make a left into Caloosa Lakes Development. Take first right past guard house onto Caloosa Lakes Blvd then 0.8 miles (after mailbox #2178) turn right

Hours:  Hours vary - so please call ahead to make sure you can experience the program and see the horses.


Over 100 children and adults with disabilities from Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties are currently served by the Smith Center for Therapeutic Riding.

While the physical therapy is valuable, the smiles and self-esteem these horses bring to their riders is priceless. Riding exercises their spirit as well as their body.

 

bullet   Hippotherapy (from the Greek 'treatment with the help of the horse') uses the movement of the horse for specific therapy goals.
bullet   We currently serve over 80 riders per week - ranging in age from 2 to 82
bullet   Volunteers are needed to assist children and adults with disabilities as they participate in therapeutic riding - no previous horse experience is required.

The Smith Center is committed to allowing everyone who would benefit from this therapy having the opportunity regardless of their personal financial situation. Our “scholarship” program has been established to help those individuals who do not qualify for insurance reimbursements and cannot afford the out of pocket expenses.

 


Licenses, Memberships and Awards:

Member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NAHRA) which makes accident insurance available for riders, volunteers and staff.

Payments Accepted:

The Smith Center does not receive state or federal grants, and is supported primarily with gifts from generous donors.
$2,000 will adopt a therapy horse for a year, $1,800 provides a full one year scholarship for a disabled rider.
